On the 1st of July 2005 Mrs Elsie Hynard officially opened Lavenham’s first village hall. “It’s a dream come true” she said as she cut the ribbon. It really was a dream come true for Elsie and many others , for some 70 odd years earlier she had been given a few pennies by her Mother for the then village hall fund. After many false starts, the present hall project got underway following village wide consultation as part of the ‘Village Design Statement’ process. The Community Council then approached all the village clubs and societies and gained the support of Lavenham Parish an Parochial Church Councils. Things snowballed from there; the Church offered a suitable site - where the hall is situated today and a gift of the proceeds from the sale of the Church Rooms, the Parish and Babergh District Councils promised grants. A business plan was drafted, build professionals appointed, grant makers approached and importantly fundraising from the annual Carnival to the production of a calendar and a whole raft of other initiatives and a direct appeal to the public for funds got under way. The finished building is it’s own testament but would not have been achieved without the aid and support of the following: Lavenham Community Council Lavenham Parish Council Lavenham Parochial Church Council The Diocese of St Edmundsbury Babergh District Council Suffolk County Council Suffolk Environmental Trust East of England Development Agency Big Lottery Fund Awards for All Foundation for Sports and the Arts Garfield Weston Foundation Bernard Sunley Foundation Fitton Trust Defra And last but not least, the people of Lavenham.
